Who’s Who in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK: APOKOLIPS WAR

Everything has been leading to this! Justice League Dark: Apokolips War has arrived on DC Universe, and it’s the culmination of almost every animated DC movie since 2013’s Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. Forget what you know about the comics, and forget everything you think you know about these characters -- because NOBODY IS SAFE! To prepare you for Darkseid’s animated endgame, here’s a primer on some of the movie's major players and a recap of their storylines in the animated universe thus far...

 

 

JOHN CONSTANTINE

Name: John Constantine 

 

First Appearance: The Saga of Swamp Thing #25

 

Bio: Constantine is an English sorcerer with a cruel sense of humor, and a foul mouth. Although he seems to care little for his allies, he has a soft spot for Zatanna. 

 

Previously Seen In: Justice League Dark and Constantine: City of Demons.

ROBIN

Name: Damian Wayne/Robin

 

First Appearance: Batman: Son of the Demon #1

 

Bio: Damian Wayne is the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul. He was raised by the League of Assassins to be the world’s deadliest weapon, until he met his father and learned the meaning of restraint and heroism. Part of his training involved joining the Teen Titans, where his anti-social tendencies annoyed some of his teammates, except for Raven. The two misunderstood teens have taken a shine to one another, and have begun to grow close. 

 

Previously Seen In: Son of Batman, Batman vs. Robin, Batman: Bad Blood, Justice League vs. Teen Titans, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, The Death of Superman, and Batman: Hush.

RAVEN

Name: Rachel Roth/Raven 

 

First Appearance: DC Comics Presents #26

 

Bio: It would be an understatement to say that Raven has daddy issues. Rachel Roth is a demon-human hybrid, born from a human woman, and a demonic father. Her father Trigon hoped to use Raven as a gateway to our world, so he could take it over. The Titans helped Raven repel her father’s attack, and Rachel grew close to her teammates – particularly Robin.

ETRIGAN

Name: Etrigan the Demon

 

First Appearance: 1972’s The Demon #1

 

Bio: Etrigan is an immortal demon, who was once bonded to the human Jason Blood. The death of Jason Blood has sent Etrigan adrift, as the Demon struggles to find his new purpose. 

 

Previously Seen In: Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Justice League Dark

 

Recommended Media: Etrigan’s background is explored in the Justice League two-parter “A Knight of Shadows.”

 

 

HARLEY QUINN

Name: Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn

 

First Appearance: Batman: The Animated Series episode “Joker’s Favor.”  

 

Bio: Dr. Harleen Quinzel was once the Joker’s psychiatrist, but she fell in love with the madman and soon became his girlfriend/sidekick Harley Quinn! Amanda Waller admired Harley’s talent, and decided to recruit the Lady of Lunacy for her government program known as Task Force X. In exchange for performing a series of dangerous covert missions, Harley was able to get time off of her sentence. Harley doesn’t see herself as a team player, but she found herself feeling a friendly affection for her Suicide Squad.

Reccomended Media: Trust us on this one, if you still haven’t seen DC Universe’s Harley Quinn, then you’re missing out.

 

 

DARKSEID

Name: Uxas/Darkseid 

 

First Appearance: Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134

 

Bio: Darkseid is the powerful ruler of Apokolips, but he’s not content with just one realm. Darkseid has his sights set on Earth, and he’s spent the last few years manipulating things behind the scenes, weakening the Justice League. Now he’s ready to strike.

BATMAN

Name: Bruce Wayne/Batman

 

First Appearance: 1939’s Detective Comics #27

 

Bio: After watching his parents gunned by criminals, Bruce Wayne vowed to make sure no other boy would ever have to become a victim of crime. The billionaire grew up training his body for his war on crime, adopting the identity of Batman. Batman’s lifestyle has left him without a sense of family, which was recently challenged by the revelation that he had a son named Damian. Taking in Damian and training him as Robin helped Bruce become a better father, friend, and crimefighter. Recently he began to open himself up emotionally, and had a brief fling with Catwoman. The relationship dissolved, and Batman’s focus returned to his mission – stopping Darkseid.

SUPERMAN

Name: Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman

 

First Appearance: 1938’s Action Comics #1

 

Bio: Superman is the moral compass of the superhero community. The last survivor of a dying world, Clark Kent was raised to use his powers to help mankind, and grew up to become the world’s most powerful hero. He recently had the fight of his life against a monstrous creature called Doomsday, but was able to return from death and reclaim his life. Unfortunately, Darkseid has plans to make sure Superman’s return won’t be a pleasant one.

CAPTAIN BOOMERANG

Name: Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang

 

First Appearance: 1960’s The Flash #117

 

Bio: Digger Harkness is a criminal who used boomerangs for his deadly crimes. He was eventually recruited into the government’s Task Force X program, where he was sent on covert missions in exchange for his freedom. Along the way he befriended a few other nutty villains, including King Shark and Harley Quinn.

ZATANNA

Name: Zatanna Zatara 

 

First Appearance: 1964’s Hawkman #4

 

Bio: Zatanna is a sorceress who was trained in the art of magic by her father. Although she dresses like a mere stage magician, she’s one of the most powerful heroes on Earth. She recently joined the Justice League, and invited her estranged boyfriend Constantine along.

Recommended Media: Zatanna fights alongside the Dark Knight in the classic Batman: The Animated Series episode “Zatanna.”

 

 

LOIS LANE

Name: Lois Lane

 

First Appearance: 1938’s Action Comics #1

 

Bio: Lois Lane is an award winning reporter with the spirit of a fighter. After a complicated courtship, Lois recently agreed to marry Clark Kent, who shocked her by revealing he was the Man of Steel. Their relationship has had a few complications, including a death and resurrection, but their love has survived everything the world has thrown their way.

LADY SHIVA

Name: Sandra Wu-San/Lady Shiva

 

First Appearance: Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter #5

 

Bio: Lady Shiva is one of the best martial art fighters in the world, with skills surpassing Batman. She’s affiliated with the League of Assassins, and always gets her target. If she’s been sent to find you, then you’re already dead.
