Nobody knows how to entertain a crowd quite like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. At last weekend's DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes, he gave us some exciting teases about his upcoming Black Adam film, in which he stars as the titular antihero. We already knew Noah Centineo would be playing Atom Smasher, but the Rock took it a step further by revealing that Black Adam will be facing the Justice Society! After seeing the team in action on DC Universe’s Stargirl, we’re even more excited about their cinematic debut. Here’s a breakdown of which members we’ll be seeing in the movie, and how and why the Rock is probably going to kick their butts.

CYCLONE

cyclone-justice-society.jpg

Name: Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone

Dream Casting: Ellie Kemper

First Appearance:  2006’s Justice Society of America #1

Biography: Maxine Hunkel is the granddaughter of Abigail Hunkel, the original Red Tornado. When she was a child, a mad scientist named T.O. Morrow experimented on her, giving her the ability to create her own whirlwinds. Maxine eventually joined the Justice Society, continuing the Hunkel family legacy.

Best Defense Against Black Adam: She can make things really windy. That would annoy Black Adam, and mess up his hair (if The Rock's Adam has any), but he’d probably still be able to beat her.

Recommended Reading: 2006’s Justice Society of America #1-4 introduces Maxine, presents her origin, and showcases her first adventure with the JSA. It’s a great way to get to know her before Black Adam wipes her off the face of the Earth.

HAWKMAN

hawkman.jpg

Name: Carter Hall/Hawkman

Dream Casting: Josh Holloway

First Appearance: 1940’s Flash Comics #1 (modern retelling in Secret Origins #11)

Biography: There have been a few versions of Hawkman’s backstory over the years, but today's best known one presents the winged hero as a reincarnated Egyptian prince. Using weapons made from Nth Metal, Carter Hall stalks criminals as the mighty Hawkman.

Best Defense Against Black Adam: He can fly and has super-strength. Then again, Black Adam has those powers, so it looks like Hawkman is out of luck. The Rock will be having Thanagarian soup for dinner.

Recommended Reading: The 2018 Hawkman series is a great entry-level comic for anybody wanting to learn more about Black Adam’s next victim.

DOCTOR FATE

doctor-fate.jpg

Name: Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate

Dream Casting:  Get a stunt actor to wear the mask and have James Earl Jones dub the voice.

First Appearance: More Fun Comics #55

Biography: While exploring an underground tunnel, Kent Nelson discovered the tomb of the wizard Nabu. The sorcerer trained Kent to harness magical powers, and he began defending justice as the hero Doctor Fate.

Best Defense Against Black Adam: Doctor Fate has the power of the wizard Nabu, which can come in handy. Of course, Black Adam has the power of Shazam, which is drawn from six different gods and heroes. Good thing Doctor Fate wears a helmet, because his head is going to be crushed!

Recommended Media: Doctor Fate fights alongside the Man of Steel in the Superman: The Animated Series episode “The Hand of Fate.” It’s a good warmup for his cinematic beating from Black Adam.

ATOM SMASHER

atom-smasher.jpg

Name: Al Rothstein/Atom Smasher

Portrayed By: Noah Centineo

First Appearance: All-Star Squadron #25

Biography: Al Rothstein was the godson of the original Atom, Al Pratt. Rothstein had the power to control his size and density, thanks to the metahuman physiology he inherited from his grandfather Cyclotron. Al chose to honor the original Atom by becoming a hero. He’s considered the Justice Society’s powerhouse due to his large size and brute strength.

Best Defense Against Black Adam: His name is “Atom Smasher” not “Black Adam Smasher,” so it’s probably best to start planning Al’s funeral. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has won over 250 WWF games while Noah Centineo has won zero.

Recommended Media: Atom-Smasher shows his strength in the Justice League Unlimited episode “Task Force X.” He’s going to need that strength since Black Adam is his next foe!

TAWKY TAWNY

tawky-tawny.jpg

Name: Tawky Tawny…..okay, so he’s not actually in the film, but we’re putting this out into the universe. Who knows?

Dream Casting: Maybe they can get that animated tiger from the Frosted Flakes commercials. He’d probably crush it.

First Appearance: Captain Marvel Adventures #79

Biography: Tawny was a tiger from India who learned how to talk and walk on his hind legs. He immigrated to America, where he tried to fit into society by becoming a museum tour guide. Trust us, Dwayne Johnson, if you include a talking tiger in your movie it will easily make a billion bucks.

Best Defense Against Black Adam: He’s a giant tiger. Even if you’re The Rock, getting mauled by a giant tiger is deadly.

Recommended Reading: We’re hoping Tawny makes it into the Black Adam movie, but if he doesn’t you can still catch his adventures in writer Jerry Ordway’s The Power of Shazam ongoing series.
